In 1650, former president Don Juan de Borja, allowed Don Pedro Solis de Valenzuela the construction of a chapel that would be called Our Lady de la Cruz of Monserrate on the top of the hill. A sculpture of the Señor Caído, (the Fallen Christ) sculpted by Pedro de Albarracín in the 17th century, stands inside the shrine. This image is highly venerated and people believe it to be the source of miracles. The fervor to the image of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate grew, which caused that the small chapel were unable to contain the pilgrims’ crowd. So it was constructed the temple that today rises in the summit of the hill. The location of the Sanctuary, to 3,200 meters above sea level, allows admiring a splendid a panoramic view of the city. Cableway or funicular train through an old forest of eucalyptus makes the mechanical accesses.
